- We had a class discussion on the morality of taking advantage of the benefits from medical research that may have been the fruit of illicit and unethical research. We know that the research done by Nazi doctors grew our medical knowledge by leaps and bounds.
- Darwinian theory became a starting point for the eugenics movement in psychology, and psychiatric technology such as lobotomy procedures, as well as the work of Margeret Sanger, founder of Planned Parenthood, was consulted by the Nazis.
- Postpartum depression, which begins as "baby blues", and could escalate to postpartum psychosis, where mom has active thoughts of harming self and babies/children. We need to be aware of basic signs of mental illness and be aware when family and friends may subtly be reaching out for help. We can be the one to save a life.
- The human person is already an integrated system, and that person needs both physical and behavioral health care. It is the system which is disintegrated and broken. It can't be fixed overnight, and so we need to put rubber to the road and work towards making the system better and better. The problems are complex, and often times, the system needs to fail to identify the problems, and find solutions. Need to look at not just the small picture, but big picture as well.
- Psychology is an attempt to answer some of our society's most asked questions about ourselves, others, and the interaction between self and society.

Final Thoughts for Fall 2016 Semester
This past week the community of San Bernardino and the surrounding cities commemorated the one year anniversary of the largest terrorist attack since 9/11 which took place 12/2/15. An event was held at CSUSB on Friday with many community leaders with messages of hope for the future.
Another event took place on Monday at Loma Linda University Church which featured a short documentary to be aired on December 14th on KVCR. The film interviewed survivors, family, first responders, behavioral health leaders, etc.
The take home message it seems to me is that society will always have folks that fall anywhere along the spectrum of faith, politics, religion, race, etc. In spite of all the conflict which we all live with daily, in times of crisis, our community has demonstrated time and again, that we have the capacity to lay all of that conflict aside when we face a common enemy, and work towards a common goal.
Whatever your future holds, academically, personally, socially, professionally, regardless if you believe in a spiritual world, God or no God, you have one shot in this life. You don't know how much time you have.
Be people of morals, values, and ethics. I can't tell you where those morals come from. But have them and follow them. And maybe there will be less abuses in this world.
Good luck.
